Trough plants are small plants suitable for containers, raised beds and small scale rock gardens. Plants grown in confined spaces often remain smaller, tighter and have more character than the same plants grown in the open garden. When growing plants in containers it is important to keep a few concepts in mind. Group plants with similar cultural requirements, such as soil fertility, light exposure, and winter hardiness. Containers are more vulnerable to heat and cold and benefit from protection from weather extremes. Soil moisture should be monitored to keep it from becoming too dry in hot weather or sodden in cold weather.
