Alpine Snowbell

This attractive small evergreen perennial forms slowly growing clumps of dark green, kidney shaped leaves which to us resembles miniature wild ginger plants.  Soldanella alpina, however, is a member of the Primula family and in spring stems to 6" high emerge topped by nodding, funnel-shaped, fringed, light blue flowers.    It is native to the mountains of Central and Southern Europe where it can be found growing in patches of melting snow.  It grows best in moist, humus rich, well-drained soil with a grit mulch in cool sun or partial shade. Zones 4-8 Primulaceae
