Why Can't I Find the USDA Zones On the Plant Information Pages?

USDA Zones are based on average annual low temperatures but do not take into account important regional variables such as the high summer temperatures in the Southwest, high humidity in the East and sustained winter wet in the Northwest.   Plants will perform differently in different regions based on these important factors. For example, anyone who has gardened in both Portland, Oregon and Gainesville, Florida, as we have, knows that different plants thrive in these two different climates although both are USDA Zones 8-9.

Because USDA zones are based only on cold temperatures and do not consider important regional variables, we believe they can be misleading and therefore do not use them in our plant information pages.  We list cold tolerance, when known.  Plant performance under specific climate conditions and suggestions for growing methods are included whenever possible.
