A delicate but eye catching penstemon with mats of bright green leaves with spikes of vivid blue-purple flowers to 24” in spring. Sun, well-drained, soil.  -20 degrees F.  Eastern Oregon, Washington and Northern Montana  Scrophulariaceae

Attractive evergreen subshrub 24”x 24” with mid-green foliage and purple, tubular flowers in late spring.   Sun to part shade, very well-drained soil, low to regular water.   Open forests and rocky slopes at mid to high elevations in the Oregon Coast Range and Cascades into Washington.   Hardy to -10 degrees F. Yellow Penstemon

Mat-forming perennial with pale yellow flowers on spikes up to 16” tall in spring. It has grown well in both our unirrigated and occasionally irrigated gardens.  Sun to part shade, well-drained soil, low to moderate water.  Found in moist to dry meadows and open woodlands at low to mid-elevations in from Eastern Oregon north to BC and east to Montana. Hardy to -30 degrees F. Scrophulariaceae

Mat-forming evergreen with small, rounded leaves, rooting stems and large lavender to purple flowers to in summer.  Makes a nice groundcover.  Grow in full sun to part shade in very well-drained soil, low water.   Hardy to –10 degrees F. Menzies' Penstemon

This is an attractive low growing mat with small bright green, toothed leaves and large lavender-pink flowers in late spring to early summer.  Full sun, very well-drained soil, low water. Hardy to –10 degrees F.  Rocky outcroppings in the mountains of Oregon and Washington.  Scrophulariaceae

Timberline Penstemon

Small, pointed to rounded leaves with very large blue-violet flowers on short stems in summer.  Considered by some botanists as an intermediate species between P. davidsonii and P. fruticosus.  Full to part sun, very well-drained soil, low water. –10 degrees F.  This is a Steens Mountain, Oregon and Northern Nevada endemic species where it grows in crevices and on exposed rocky outcropppings.  Scrophulariaceae

Hot Rock Penstemon

Woody shrub to 18” with pale green, leathery leaves and spikes of creamy white flowers.  Sun, well-drained, soil.  -20 degrees F.  Dry, rocky areas OR, CA NV, UT Scrophulariaceae

Difficult in cultivation, it should probably be considered a collector's species.

This is a low growing population originally from Mt. Hood, Oregon.  It is an evergreen subshrub 6" x 24" with pinkish-purple flowers in late spring.   Grow in full sun, very well-drained soil, low water. Hardy to -20 degrees F. Scrophulariaceae

Small Flowered Penstemon

This low-growing penstemon has a compact form and attractive spikes of small purple flowers to about 6" in late spring.  It can be grown in sun or part shade in well-drained soil with low to regular water.  Our plants are grown from seed collected in the Washington State Cascades.  The species is found throughout the Western States in a wide variety of habitats at various elevations. Pincushion Penstemon

This is an attractive mat-forming penstemon with gray-green foliage and vivid pink flowers on short stems in summer.  It can be grown in sun or part shade in poor, very well-drained soil with low to regular water.  It is found on rocky outcroppings in the Siskiyou Mountains in Northern California and on both sides of the Cascades from Oregon into Southern Washington.  Hardy to -20 degrees F. This easy to grow Penstemon has serrated leaves and purple, tubular flowers in summer.   24”x12” Grow in sun to part shade in well-drained soil, moderate water.  This one tends to be a seeder in my garden and I like to grow it in less fertile areas that receive little summer irrigation. It still does great and there are fewer seedlings to pull.  Found along moist rocky slopes and streambanks in the Oregon Cascades north to BC.   Hardy to -10 degrees F. Scrophulariaceae
