The Nepal Lily has large funnel shaped flowers that are lime green with a prominent burgundy center. The petals (technically tepals) are reflexed and form a charming curl when viewed from the side. Overall height is variable from 1 to 3 ft and plants can produce multiple stalks, each with one to several flowers. An interesting feature is that the blooming stalks are stoloniferous and travel underground for some distance from the bulb. This makes for challenging pot culture with some flowering shoots growing out drainage holes at the bottom of pots! The Nepal Lily is best grown in a cool location in partial shade and humus rich, very well drained soil kept evenly moist during the growing season. It is native from Yunnan Provence through the Himalayas to Nepal and NW India where it grows in forests and on slopes among grasses and shrubs at elevations of 6,000 to 9,000 ft. It is considered cold hardy to 0 degrees F but may rot in heavy winter soils. In poorly drained soil, the bulbs can be lifted in winter and stored in just moist potting soil in a cool, freeze free location. If this is your plan, be sure to mark the location of the bulb when you plant it. The Nepal Lily is worth the extra effort. Liliaceae
