Western Native Hybrids

Bred from among the 11 pacific coast iris species, these hybrids come in a dazzling array of colors and patterns.   They do best when grown in full sun, in very well drained soil with low summer water.  The plant featured at left has survived winter temperatures around 5 degrees F in our garden.  The group is generally considered hardy to about 10-15 degrees F.   Iridaceae

Miniature Iris

The reticulated irises are fragrant, late winter to early spring bloomers that grow only 4-6" high.  They occur in shades of purple and violet (Iris reticulata) and yellow (Iris danfordiae).  Grow in sun to part shade in well drained soil.  Good for forcing.  Native to the Caucuses.  Hardy to -20 degrees F.
