This Western U.S. species has nodding brownish purple or yellow mottled flowers and stems up to 3' with whorls of leaves along them. It is a highly variable plant with a wide distribution along the West Coast. It occurs in dry scrub and grasslands at elevations up to 6,000'. Needs well drained soil and not too much summer water. Bulbs take years to reach flowering size when grown from seed and may not flower each year in cultivation. Also called Rice Lily because of the rice-like bulblets it produces. Hardy to –20 degrees F.
