Mt Cenis Bellflower


 

Mat-forming alpine with rosettes of bright green, fleshy leaves which produce a single, upright star-shaped blue flower.  The flower normally has 5 petals as do other members of the genus, but one day in the nursery we noticed the plant at left with 7 petals.  I'm glad we took the photo right away because by the following day the flower was spent.  Grow in sun to part shade in moist, gritty, very well drained soil during the growing season, drier in winter.    Moist rocky soils in the Western Alps.   Hardy to -20 degrees F.  Campanulaceae
