Achimenes

These tender, rhizomatous perennials originate in subtropical areas of Mexico, South America and the Caribbean and are known by a variety of common names including Hot Water Plant, Cupid's Bower, Widow's Tears & Magic Flowers.  A relative of the African violet, they have long been cultivated as greenhouse and house plants and many cultivars have been developed.  In temperate climates they are most often grown in containers where they grow as upright or trailing plants and produce numerous showy flowers. They should be watered freely when in growth and allowed to become dry down after flowering. The small rhizomes are winter dormant and can be kept in their pots or dug and stored in a dry, cool location until the following spring.
