An unusual perennial shrub that can reach 4 - 6 feet high and wide, the flowering maple has attractive leaves and brightly colored yellow and red flowers that dangle along its stem from spring to fall. Grow in sun in moderately fertile, well drained soil. Can be grown in the open garden, a container or trained up a wall or trellis and pruned to maintain desired form. Hardy to 10 degrees F and perhaps lower if mulched. Native to Brazil. Not really a maple, it is instead a member of the hibiscus (Malvaceae) family. |
